Featured: FILTERPAVE® Porous Pavement System
Project Installation: International Crane Foundation, Baraboo, Wisconsin
The new African Crane refuge at this facility encompasses 5 acres with 20,000 sq ft of winding pathways created from the porous and decorative FilterPave pavement system.
Design firm MSA chose the FilterPave hard-surfaced porous pavement system for the green-oriented foundation for a variety of environmental and aesthetic reasons:
- the walkway is porous allowing stormwater to infiltrate
- the pavement utilizes a high percentage of recycled materials that are manufactured or extracted close to the project site
- the multi-colored glass mosaic surface would create a desirable aesthetic surface vs. traditional asphalt or concrete.
The majority of the curvilinear walkway is 12 ft. wide, with some areas as narrow as 6 ft. Canopied seating areas surround the refuge, positioned in key areas to provide visitors plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy cranes in a natural environment.
The FilterPave walkway was constructed in two days by Vinton Construction, Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Because of the challenging terrain, motorized buggys were used to easily transport the pavement material. Typically the material is dispensed directly from the mixer.
The screeding and finishing process is similar to concrete placement. The FilterPave walkway cured in only a few hours and was ready to receive pedestrian traffic.
