Colorado Springs – Olympic City USA

Every year, visitors from around the world travel to Colorado Springs to hike the 130 miles of trails or drive through the twisting canyons and winding mountain passes. But Colorado Springs now has much more to add to the trip itinerary.

In 2012, the Colorado Springs City of Champions tourism initiative was conceptualized to include four key projects that would attract visitors to Colorado Springs. One of the major projects was to construct the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum, which broke ground in 2017.

Located in the heart of Colorado Springs, the 60,000-square-foot U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum opened in July 2020 and is now welcoming over 350,000 visitors per year. The museum took three years to complete and features 12 galleries on athlete training, the Summer and Winter Games, and the USPOC Hall of Fame.

Project Background:

In 2016, the project engineers and architects reached out to Presto Geosystems for a slope stabilization solution to accommodate the unique architectural design of the museum. The museum’s design was inspired by the graceful twisting and turning movement of athletes, and the architects wanted to preserve the look around the buildings.

Project Solution:

With the GEOWEB System’s flexibility to conform to the unique architecture, it was the perfect “green” solution for the slopes. The project engineers worked with the Presto Geosystems’ design civil engineers to plan and execute a suitable project design.

The GEOWEB® 3D Soil Confinement System was securely installed on a 1:1 slope utilizing TP-225 tendons with earth anchors. The sections were infilled with topsoil to establish vegetation after the construction of the new building. It was imperative to the project owners that the system would be flexible enough to move around flagpoles while allowing for trees and shrubs to be planted on the slopes.

Project Results:

Presto’s GEOWEB system allowed several of these features to be confidently constructed to meet project specifications and create outstanding visual appeal.
